Quite a reasonable statement of the welfare problem. But how do you propose to make all people self-responsible in a society that refuses to give equal opportunity to so many? Minorities, women, etc.? Yes, given an OPPORTUNITY, most people will act in their own self-interest. But so many are not given that opportunity. Precisely because it conflicts with the self-interest of others who have done a nice job of monopolizing wealth and power. IMHO, we are going to need to solve some of these very intractable problems before we can simply end welfare. It is too easy to say we need to eliminate welfare and make all people self-responsible. We need to make people self-responsible, then we can eliminate welfare. In order to do that, we need a society that provides equal education and opportunity to all its citizens. But that is certainly not what we have now.
