"The potential for abuse" is imo a morally charged term. Untoward event is perhaps more general?
I would certainly favor a controlled environment, especially for novices or exploring new dose levels. I laid basics out in an earlier post to Michael M.
Prescription is more problematic. These drugs are acutely sensitive to "set and setting", i.e. the mental set of the drug taker and the physical and psychological setting in which the drug is followed from onset to resolution. The earliest studies were done in sterile white hospital-type rooms, and imo that was a prescription for extreme discomfort and disorientation.
The key to safe and sane use of psychedelics is for the drug seeker to approach the drug with honest, balanced expectations, and for an experienced, gentle and trustworthy "guide" to be present from onset to complete recovery of sobriety. I'm not sure that a prescription would either ensure or inhibit this sort of guide-pilgrim (forgive the religious overtones, but I grasp for better terms) format. Psychedelics are revered in those indigenous societies that have found them in their flora as "teachers". And like teachers, they can be at once beautiful and very stern. ...But we have a culture of turning things into toys, and psychedelics are far worse suited to this sort of casual treatment than alcohol or even cannabis.
