So the lack of participation in the trials is actually a strength, not a weakness? That's a new point of view. I thought that the participation in current W-CDMA trials is vitally important to ensure presence in Asia. BTW... you can just as well flip your sentence and say that W-CDMA can't go forward without Nokia.

The proportion of Nokia's essential W-CDMA IPR may be disputed - but not its existence. Here's an idea; why don't you call Qualcomm and ask whether they can sell W-CDMA chipsets without paying Nokia? If they say "yes", then we know Qualcomm's position. If they refuse to answer - that's also pretty informative.
