Adelle, the big institutions have tons of cash at their call to pour into the market whenever they feel appropriate. In fact, many of it is automated. When the wealthiest generate more wealth, it's expected. When the 'little guy' as you say, generates wealth, it's called 'luck'.
That is why some use the expression 'do as the wealthy do and buy the stocks they buy'.

Today a perfect example is HLTH. Read the news item on it. Is this stock going down today ?
Only with profit taking. They need some significant news item to follow-up and sustain it, but my guess is that it will rally into the mid -30's, if not today then by Monday.
