Dell Shares Up on Analysts' Comments

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Shares in Dell Computer Corp. (DELL.O) rose on Friday after several analysts made cautiously positive comments on the stock following new product announcements and an analyst meeting earlier in the week.

Dell shares rose 3-1/8 to 54-11/16 on Nasdaq.

Dell emphasized to analysts and reporters this week that it was going after the market for servers, which are computers that carry out the behind-the-scenes functions of Web sites and networks, such as managing traffic flow.

Merrill Lynch analyst Steve Fortuna wrote in a research note to clients that ``Dell's analyst meeting yesterday reaffirmed our conviction in the size and scope of the company's Internet infrastructure and enterprise opportunity in spite of the lack of any surprise announcements.'

``Dell was conservative with regard to the year's financial outlook,' he wrote. ``For Q1, however, we now believe that there is less chance of upside to our number as a result of a somewhat higher operating cost ratio.'

Dell told analysts on Thursday it would not raise its expectations of revenue growth in the low-30s-percent range for the year.

Dell also said operating expenses would be slightly higher in the first and second quarters as the company introduces new hardware and services for the ``back office' market.

``We are concerned that this (attack on the Internet infrastructure market) could cause a potential conflict with the direct model, but Dell argues it will effectively ``own' customer relationships,' wrote SG Cowen analyst Richard Chu.

Salomon Smith Barney analyst Richard Gardner wrote: ``We do believe that Dell shares may be choppy near term in sympathy with competitors who report weak first-quarter top line results (Compaq Computer Corp. (CPQ.N) and Gateway Inc. (GTW.N)), but believe the shares will recover once Dell reports April quarter earnings in early May.'
