To compare, as you call it, the "Baby Bell Split-up" with free competition is...well...absurd really. A Public Utility is a monopoly created for the public good. Once it out-grows it's usefulness they should be allowed to compete only in a free market. MSFT never enjoyed the advantage of that given a Public Utility.

MSFT was getting under everyone's skin in one way or another. The browser thing made the DOJ think it knew better then the private sector. Myself , I like the browser being part of the OS. I also think it inevitable things will end up that way as we all start using the 'Net in our everyday life.

As for the IBM decree. That was a farce, which never provide any good to the public. Basically a long legal struggle, ended with everyone shrugging their shoulders.

Linux will do more for the public than the government...watch!
