Old news wrapped in a new date, but still nice to read:
"Wireless is hot Who hasn't noticed that wireless is hot? But the Internet is about to make it even better, says Mark Anderson, the publisher of Strategic News Service. Why? Because this year, both Europe and Japan will be rolling out third generation, or 3G, wireless systems that provide high-speed data links for Internet access. Merrill Lynch thinks 3G will mean that data should account for 45% of traffic on mobile networks by 2003, up from less than 2% now. Communications chips have been seen as one of the safer ways to invest in the Internet. But you still have to be careful. It's better to underweight companies that make chips used at the edge of the network, in things like cable or DSL modems. This area is highly competitive. What's more, Qualcomm (QCOM, news, msgs) and Ericsson (ERICY, news, msgs) have agreed on a chipset that will support a short-range broadband connection called Bluetooth. "These are all earth-changing events in terms of providing bandwidth through phones," Anderson says.
These changes will benefit the handset companies like Nokia (NOK, news, msgs), Motorola and Ericsson. It will also help the companies that make chips for handset, like ARM Holdings (ARMHY, news, msgs), RF Micro Devices (RFMD, news, msgs), Anadigics (ANAD, news, msgs), Alpha Industries (AHAA, news, msgs), Texas Instruments and TriQuint Semiconductor (TQNT, news, msgs)."
