Agreed.
But "desirable" isn't the issue. That makes me thing of Queer Chic and exploitation of victimhood, the subtle idea that gays are better than the rest of us.
Conversely calling them >people who can't much help
themselves should be treated with compassion< very effectively conveys the subtext that gays are unfortunates, worse than the rest of us.
I seek the middle road, one of complete neutrality, neither fearing nor championing gays, but allowing them the same chances everyone else gets. Just plain people, no better (sorry PCs) and no worse (sorry religious right).
