Razorfish to set up shop in melbourne

Village Roadshow and Network Ten will bring one of the world's biggest Web design agencies to Australia as part of a joint Internet venture.

Razorfish - which employs 1,500 staff in the US and Europe - has begun setting up a Melbourne office which will open in June with 50 people.

As part of a deal with Village Ten Online - the joint Internet venture between Village Roadshow and Ten Network - Razorfish's director of client strategy in San Francisco, Mr Ken Manning, will become Village Ten chief executive from May 1.

However, Razorfish will not invest in the Village Ten operation; Village Ten will simply be its first client.

The chief executive of Village Roadshow Online, Mr Ian Basser, said Razorfish, which is valued at about $US2.3 billion on Nasdaq, was one of the few firms that could manage such a large venture.

"There are lots of excellent design firms in Australia," Mr Basser said. "But we had to build something very big very quickly."

Razorfish will design Village Ten sites which will replace the separate Village Roadshow and Network Ten entertainment sites. Ten Ventures and Village Roadshow Online would continue to exist "in name only", Mr Basser said.

Razorfish's arrival in Melbourne - and later in Sydney - will increase demand for an already limited supply of trained workers in the industry. When US firms Oven Digital and Rare Medium set up Australian operations in May and October last year, they both poached staff from Spike Networks.

The general manager of Rare Medium Asia Pacific, Mr Andrew Farrell, said Razorfish was not a threat because there were many opportunities for Web design companies in Australia. "There's still a lot of business in this region if you look at where we are," he said.

Mr Farrell said Rare Medium had won the Sydney Festival Web site from Spike and would be announcing projects with "top-tier corporate" companies in the legal, technology and retail sectors within a month.
