Will IBM (Japan) be next to announce?>> I have suspected for some time that IBM would announce first. But, no matter, the key is where the cost/rewards cross over. From a recent presentation HMTT said that horizontal recording gets us to 100 GB/sq. in. while perpendicular (vertical) recording gets us to 500 GB/sq. in. Extension of horizontal recording has a lot of enablers (challenges) attached to it: like continuous film media, ultra smooth surfaces, load/unload mechanisms, secondary actuators, better control of head geometry, better control of contaminants, better control of resonance, etc etc. Best, Stitch
