Actually, the first game of chess can be traced to around 5 A.D. in North-West India - so the grain in the story may well have been wheat. It first spread to Persia. It was called chaturanga from the Sanskrit chatur: four. A chaturanga was an army composed of four elements: elephants, chariots, cavalry, infantry.
