Strictly as a matter of taste, I don't like to operate from that premise - i.e.rhetorical effectiveness. It's easily hollowed. I prefer seeking what's true (edit - whatever THAT is!), whether or not it's glamorous. I find that it has more staying power. There are many neglected and unglamorous ideas embedded somewhere in our experience which ring true and gain weight if examined thoughtfully. Conversely there are many things which, while veracious or at least resonant at first glance, don't hold up under the microscope of an aroused intellect. I despise soundbites, since they are usually of this type. But our society has been lulled into tolerating the construction of our social identity out of soundbites. Philosophical Legos. Small, colorful, easy to handle and assemble to suit, but they make sucky houses. <g>
