Hain, >>Those were secondary arguments made by President Nixon when, responding to the OPEC embargo, he issued a call for self-sufficiency in late 1973. He dubbed the effort "Project Independence," challenging the nation to be self-sufficient by 1980. It was a time when many experts warned that the world would run out of oil within a few decades, with prices reaching as high as $80 a barrel.

Interesting that the writer brought up this project. I was part of the team on this project that generated the models. Every combination of methods to generate energy was modeled and there is just no way this country can be energy independent with current technologies. We need a radical new technology for us to be energy independent. The technologies we are seeing today could only slow down the consumption of commodities that generate energy, but even this will not make us independent. Also, lowering the cost of energy has been hindered by the decline in nuclear power plants. But this would only be true if we would follow the French model of recycling the fuel rods.
