I do not agree that simply providing information does more harm than good, even when it is not accompanied by an attempt to instill values. I am appalled by some of the misinformation and lack of information that I still encounter among adults on the subject of sex, let alone on the subject of the effects of various drugs. One would think that some of the ignorance would be impossible, yet there you are.

Moving on, one of the problems that I have noted with regard to pushing abstinence and downplaying contraception for people in their late teens is that it tends to fall into the trap of being ludicrous. What I mean is, it tends to avert the eyes from these teens' very compelling sexual drive. A "just say no" attitude is fine, but not everyone is going to say no every time; acknowledging it and teaching a base level of preparedness for the unintended strikes me as simple common sense as well as making the overall message more likely to be heard.
