thank you for pointing that out, gottfried. i had completely overlooked the new part. this substantially changes what i thought would be a valid solution. i recall having recently read about a way to stop your pc from checking the a:drive first. i mistakenly thought i'd found it.

regarding "Besides, for newer computers we have a rebootable restore CD", i just got done creating 5 floppy antivirus rescue disks, and i also have 3 norton floppy basic rescue disks. so it looks like i'm relying on the a:drive to get me going in emergencies.

"I do know my PC checks for a bootable CD first"

i was under the impression that the a:drive was the very first place a pc looks on boot up.
