Another "by the way": in relationships, one can babble on about openness and respecting one's personhood and the evils of treating people as possessions, and when push comes to shove, get a big kick out of one's lover's jealousy because if he or she cares, he/she will be afraid of losing one.

I don't think that there are many people who can approach the purity of Ivory soap when reconciling their ideals with their personal failings. We do our best; angels can do no more.

However, I don't see that it necessarily follows that our personal interactions should become those of a society at large dealing with the individuals composing that society. We may care deeply about many things in which we individually and as a society have no right to interfere, however disturbed we may be.
