Rocky, excuse my ignorance in these matters, but why would a miniature optical medium require a drive, one could have a "tiltable mirror", or even an array of tiltable micromirrors (TI's technology) to read and write on the disk without actual mechanical rotating drives. Did I just throw into the public domain another technology? (VBG).

Virtual retinal displays and some projection displays are already using micromachined mirrors for scanning and projecting images point by point.
