But I assume that the teacher wants something that could live in Mercury's atmosphere and is sentient.

That's a tough one.

Mercury has some serious drawbacks; radiation and heat. She would have to first have something that this sentient alien could eat...say a bacteria/plant thing that lived on nutrients in the soil and derived energy from photosythesis.

The sentient alien could be an insect-like thing, that stays under the surface of the planet and eats this plant.

Yeah, that would work.
