Good point. I like that you used the term "gain" instead of command in relation to respect. Some people feel that this is simply the magic that Old Miss Murphey in the third grade has; and, you either got it or you don't. In addition to the commanding approach being limited in its effects, when you use the term "gain," you imply that it isn't a mystical quality that Ole Miss Murphey possesses, but one that involves purpose. I would further clarify that Miss Murphey sees value in the learning process and models that belief to the students. Do you know that the most common reward for students who demonstrate hard work is to give them "free time;" in which, they are supposed to do something unproductive. Its no wonder we have so many adults who think they have really "made it" when they can get to the brain dead state of beer sloshing couch potato.
