Platinum in Proton Exchange Membranes (PEM) of fuel cells. I found some references which state that the Dow PEM being used in various fuel cells contains 0.035 oz platinum per kWatt. If this is correct there will be enormous demand for platinum in the future. I assume that, for vehicle use, the fuel cells will have to supply about 40 kW. That equates to 1.4 ounces of platinum per vehicle.

Have I got it wrong? Or have there been developments; perhaps something to replace platinum?
