thanks ed for your explanation...I guess when you are selling farther calls or puts you are actually betting on a turn around at some point and the positions becoming profitable... however, wouldn't that be considered a "wash transaction" since you are not waiting 30 days before re-establishing a "substantialy similar position"... and hence you can not claim the loss...!
