Gary here is the response which I would have made but someone did it for me. By the time the facts are presented to you in cogent, intelligent manner........you start backtracking as is EVIDENT in your last post. You wouldn't have to do that if you didn't try to angle irrelevant contract wins as a sign that CSCO is finally getting some return from their $20 billion dollar investment to crack the Carrier/PTT market.

Let's face it.......you don't sound all that convincing to even yourself that CSCO is going to recoup their investment into the PTT/Carrier market. And what will do that to their reputation, credibility, momentum, and most of all their CAPITALIZATION when the market realizes the Emperor is not wearing any clothes (outside of their "Enterprise" estate?)

CSCO in my opinion is more exposed now than it ever was -- on many fronts. They will for the first time understand what it is like to compete with real competitors. Being a star in the NCAA doesn't necessarily imply that the player will be a star in the NBA and CSCO in my opinion could experience the same levitating fall that 3COM went through when the going got rough.

Gary, DT deal is small and the rest is mostly CLECs for
comodity internet.
CSCO is not delivering platform for serious deployment in
SBC,Bell Atlantic, France Telecom(only enterprise),Bell South, British Telecom PLC or C&W.
They will remain provider for money loosing IP service providers and CLECs.
Telia all IP network, ION for Spint- where are those promises?

and 80% Qtr/Qtr growth in the SP space (which Don Listwin mentioned in a recent
interview) is pretty darn strong.... you have to admit.
OG
Yes I have, but even CSCO executives admitted that quite good part of so call SP space is selling enterprise products
to carries, which in turn take care of entire network of corporate client, including hardware and software. As for ION and Telia, most of vendors will hype after they deliver.
CSCO on the other hand,is using its great PR dep. to hype
somthing they hope to accomplished and show they are in SP space.
Gary it is different story to build network for IP SP or small fraction of large network, rather then transatlantic mosnter, fully integrated
network with super QoS for someone like ATT/BT JV.

FUndamentally we don't disagree. CSCO has a ways to go. My point is that they are making in-roads to the SP's...many times using existing products but they are building relationships, getting experience, and are executing their plan. They've been at it two years....perhaps. Many have said the same things you are saying but I wouldn't expect any company to penetrate the SP space any more significantly than Cisco has in just two years. Time will tell.
