So true. We were involved in the settlement of a refugee family from Bosnia several years ago. When the two young boys started school they didn't know English and didn't quite fit in with the prevailing culture at school.

After five of six months the boys were doing well enough with English to to be near the top of their classes. FWIW, there was no Serbo-Croation bi-lingual program at the school (thank God).

Still, in spite of being energetic, friendly youngsters they were not winning any popularity contests at school.

In a parent-teacher conference, one of their teachers actually told the Mom, ".....you know, you have to take some responsibility for this.....the other kids might accept your sons more readily if you hadn't given them such odd names."

Unbelievable!

Not meant to insult all teachers -- My son, son-in-law and a couple of my life-long best pals are teachers.
