VANCOUVER, British Columbia--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 10, 2000--Destiny Media Technologies, Ltd. (Pink Sheets:DSNY) announced today that a North American patent is pending to protect the unique nature of the company's MPE digital media distribution system.
``The potential applications for MPE capture a full range of Internet content and entertainment,' says Destiny CEO Steve Vestergaard. ``MPE supports audio, video, imagery, and text in a self-contained executable file. Some of the exciting applications we are exploring include music, digital books, cartoons, analyst reports and trading cards.'
The MPE digital media distribution system is a form of ``digital shrink wrapping.' The MPE file contains an embedded digital media player enabling a user who downloads a file to instantly hear and view the file's contents. This embedded player concept is unique and provides users with the simplest method to access digital downloads.
MPE also provides a mechanism for locking the downloaded files to a single user. If the content hasn't been paid for, a teaser will play. If a user chooses to pay for the content, they execute an e-commerce transaction, at which point the file is unlocked, but only for that user's computer. If the file is passed on to a friend, the file reverts to ``preview mode,' and the new user can make a transaction decision. This platform provides excellent opportunities for promotions and viral marketing strategies across the Internet.
Vestergaard says, ``This concept is a great deal for web site owners who act as the retailer. A user might download the file, but not purchase it. If they pass it on to a friend and that user buys it, the originating web site still participates in the transaction and receives a portion of the revenue.'
The MPE file does not require an external player or any other lengthy downloads because the file contains an embedded player. The benefit is that the file will automatically play the content when clicked on.
The e-commerce transaction takes place directly from the file, where a user purchases a code key and the funds are taken from a digital wallet. Security built into the file can track royalties owing to the originating web site and other rights holders, such as record labels, artists and content owners. Destiny acts as a clearinghouse and appropriate payments are distributed accordingly.
A user would purchase credits in an accumulation account ahead of time using a credit card, debit card or phone card. Purchasing an MPE from an account is as simple as entering in the account PIN number from within file.
``This technology allows artists and content holders to market and promote themselves freely and easily throughout the Internet, but still be assured that their rights are protected and they are compensated for their works,' adds Vestergaard. ``We are targeting the music industry as our first industry sector, but see growth opportunities for MPE on a number of fronts.'

Another Destiny technology, Clipstream(TM), allows artists to preview the music on a web site before downloading the MPE file. Clipstream, available at ttp://www.clipstream.com, is a tool that embeds streaming audio in a web page.
Alternatively, artists can use the RadioDestiny broadcaster (http://www.radiodestiny.com) to set up special MPE Internet radio stations. These radio stations will run 24/7 and will also stream visual metadata. This metadata shows a window displaying the album cover and lyrics as the song plays, giving the internet radio listener the opportunity to download the MPE on impulse.
Destiny MediaTechnologies Ltd.(http://www.destiny-software.com) has been developing leading edge software since 1991. Destiny develops accessible and cost-effective enabling technologies for online media streaming such as the Destiny Media Player(TM), the world's smallest and most versatile digital music player and Internet radio receiver; the RadioDestiny Broadcaster(TM) software for personal and commercial Internet radio broadcasting; and the Radio Destiny Broadcast Network(TM), a network of eclectic personal radio webcasters.
