(TSM) Chairman Morris Chang said on the weekend he expects sales and profit at the world's largest pure chip foundry to double in 2000. TSMC posted a net profit of NT$24.56 billion (US$1=NT$30.302) in 1999 on sales of NT$73.13 billion, representing year-on-year growth of 60% and 46%, respectively.
Chang also said TSMC has a capacity this year of some 3.4 million wafers. The increased capacity follows its recent acquisitions of Worldwide Semiconductor Manufacturing and TSMC-Acer Semiconductor Manufacturing Corp.
Meanwhile, memory chip maker Vanguard International Semiconductor Corp., in which TSMC holds a 27% stake, broke even in March amid its restructuring as a chip foundry, Chang said
Chang said he remains upbeat about the future prospects for Vanguard, which said it saw sales grow 11% in March to NT$1.33 billion from NT$1.20 billion the year before.
TSMC's stock closed 5% higher Monday at NT$210.00 on volume of 35.6 million shares. |
