Also, a real competitor isn't going to be formed overnight. If willamete is better than thunderbird there is probably relatively little AMD can do about it. (They can do a process shrink, but how long do you think they can stay a whole process level ahead of intel?) They'll have to get back with a new core. Fortunately AMD has a new core coming out next year. I'm not sure whether I intend to stick around that long though.

To not be a flash in the pan, AMD needs to do better than what you have suggested........its really critical that the company perform in such a way that it doesn't fall behind Intel like it used to and that it doesn't lose investors like you or I. AMD needs to develop stability and ongoing credibility.

So I am hoping that they have all the bases covered when it comes to Willamette.
