Bosco, I agree on the IBM comparision. Here's an even more upbeat view of MOT earnings by Reuters. MOT PR people couldn't have written it better. ********** Motorola Profits Jump 144 Percent

By Reuters CHICAGO (Reuters) - Motorola Inc. (MOT.N), the world's No. 2 wireless phone maker, said on Monday its first-quarter profits before one-time items jumped 144 percent, topping Wall Street forecasts, as computer chip demand offset lower-than-expected cellular phone earnings.
Despite stellar gains in cellular phone sales, profits for that unit fell from the year-ago quarter because of a shift toward lower-end, lower-margin phones, higher component costs and increased advertising spending. Analysts said the disappointing cellular earnings marred an otherwise strong quarter.
Motorola said it earned $449 million, or 59 cents per share excluding charges relating to the acquisition of General Instrument Corp. as well as certain one-time gains. That compares with $184 million, or 26 cents per share, before one-time items in the year-ago quarter. nytimes.com ***************** That should pique some institutions interest. Jack |
