PARIS, April 10 (Reuters) - France's top private telephone operator Cegetel said on Monday it would team up with United States' Motorola <MOT.N> to provide its SFR mobile subscribers with Motorola's WAP (Wireless Application Protocol) phones.
Cegetel, owned by conglomerate Vivendi <EAUG.PA>, said in a statement it would offer customers a selection of three Motorola WAP phones, connecting them to the Multi-Access Portal (MAP) Internet venture between Vivendi and Vodafone Airtouch <VOD.L>.
WAP technology gives users access to the Internet via their mobile phones. Cegetel said the offer would start in May, when the MAP Internet portal will open, providing 200 WAP services.
"The deal we have signed with Motorola comes as part of a long mutual experience in the mobile market," said Jean-Marc Tassetto, joint general director of SFR.
"We hope our new range of SFR WAP products will be as successful as the SFR and Motorola packs launched in 1997, 1998 and 1999, and will provide our clients easy access to the world of mobile Internet," he added.
