I once had a 1970 mustang fast back
we changed the bellhousing and dropped a chevey in it.
Pissed everyone off..
You did what?!? Gee. I can't imagine why anyone would be upset. I mean, the 302 is such a wonderful, reliab..... Ummmm.. Oops. Nevermind.
I really shouldn't badmouth the 302 too much, though. The one in my 91 runs like a top and I drive it like it's stolen. The past few thousand miles have all been track miles, and it's never missed a beat.
Breaking the crank at the number 2 main journal is a frequent failure in the Fords when used for SCCA racing. But they require that we use a cast iron crank. Really pretty weird. I have to use an Edelbrock Performer RPM intake, Holley 4150 double-pumper, unlimited ignition (no crank-fire, though), unlimited exhaust if it's under 104 db, 10.3:1 CR, unlimited cam (up to .500" lift), unlimited brakes, a serious cage and SFC's, can lighten it to 3080 pounds, and can use any rear-gears I want, but I can't use plexiglas rear side windows, steel crank, or a reliable aftermarket or even very modified stock tranny; that'd deviate too far from stock specs and/or be contrary to the goal of making it an "affordable" sport. <sigh>
Most of the guys I talk to feel it'd be a much less expensive sport if we could use good cranks. Any way you slice it, crank breakage is very expensive. |
