Perhaps I have been very fortunate, X, in that so many of the people in my family and social circle are devout believers who are also horrified at the attempts to push other people around with stuff like prayer in the schools. It may be because in my own family there are a number of different sects so that understanding and respect simply come with the territory.

IMO, the problems are not due to organized religion per se. They are the same problems that we have with political parties and any organization of people with an agenda. Sooner or later, they seek to foist that agenda on others.
