Hi brees,
Are you talking about Chris Jackson of the Denver Nuggets? I remember this when it happened-- I don't believe he was making a statement about the meaning the National Anthem, but claiming that it was against his religion (Islam, which he had embraced just a few years before and taken his new name of Abdul-rauf) However, the NBA policy includes an agreement that players stand for the NA, and he had signed this, so he was out of luck. They are a private organization and can call the shots. ALso, some Islamic organization had said that standing for a national anthem did not violate Islamic beliefs.
I used to be an avid basketball fan- which is why this stuck in my head.
