Alexa, I think your right, too many young children of American's inner city don't have the same opportunity that the kids from the suburbs or in many cases Rural area's have, especially with regards to education...

The question should be then. How can we help ensure these kids get an equal chance at a quality education? Especially in the secondary and Primary levels.

To provide an example. The cost in the state of Washington for a child to attend the public school system is approximately $5,300.00 per year.Is this a reasonable expenditure? The cost to pay for a private grade school and secondary school education is approximately $3,300 per year.

Bearing these figures in mind it alway amazes me why we don't go to a system of voucher's. Here is a rough outline on how it would work. The state would take the cost of education per student and subtract 20%. Why 20%? (to pay for disabled childrens education) then take a check and send it to every family who has a child, the parents can then cash the check at the school of their choice. I think a program like this would immediatly show which schools are good performers, and which schools are poor performers.

Something similar to this program has been tried in a couple of very small area's of the inner cities of Milwaekee (I believe), and it's success thus far has been excellent. To start with every inner city school system should try this approach. After about 5 years examine the results and if it's effective, initiate it nationwide.

After all to do nothing will continue the current cycle of people with little chance of success in life.

So what's the problem. Well.. you can sum it up in one word. NEA! Everytime something similar to this is on the ballots the NEA launches into one of their multimillion dollar propaganda wars to the public about how it would destroy education as we know it in America. Close the Education Department and you might have a fighting chance.

I think it's the height of hypocrisy that our Congressional and Presidential leaders who are wealthy enough, don't send their kids to public schools in Washington D.C. and yet they force middle income and poor people to attend these government schools.

Just my Humble opinion.
