M2 PRESSWIRE-1 March 2000-Cablefree Solutions: First commercial Laser/IR Gigabit system revolutionises wireless connectivity; Newly launched Cablefree Gigabit system already deployed in major, London-wide Wireless Metropolitan Area Network (C)1994-2000 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD

Surrey -- Laser/Infra-Red wireless connectivity leader, Cablefree Solutions Limited, has launched the world's first Gigabit-class Laser/IR system for transmitting voice and data over short and medium-range distances. This alternative to expensive leased lines and complex microwave links offers major performance and price advantages across a wide range of wireless telecoms and datacoms applications

The Cablefree Gigabit system is a Laser/IR optical line-of-sight (LOS) wireless communications system, which offers maximum data rates mirroring those of optical fibre and which are many times faster than LOS microwave systems, such as those traditionally used for wireless point-to-point connectivity. It is the first commercially available system able to carry voice and data traffic at rates from 622 to 1,500Mbps over short to medium-ranges up to one or two kilometres. At 1,500Mbps the new system supports Gigabit Ethernet, Gigabit fibre channel and Gigabit HDTV.

Enhanced fade margin ensures reliable high-speed, uninterrupted data transmission capable of interfacing all major data networking, fixed-wire and wireless telecommunications formats. The system is ideal for linking a corporate or campus virtual private network (VPN) or LANs located in separate buildings or on separate sites or across Metropolitan area networks. The system requires no frequency licence to operate, compared with many radio-based wireless telecoms transmission systems. This ensures that clients can have the system installed and operational at a moment's notice.

Use of wide beam technology overcomes potential problems caused by vibration and building movement to guarantee correct beam alignment at all times. Link availability of Cablefree systems is between 99.7 and 99.99%, depending on site location and link length.

Cablefree Gigabit enjoys uninterrupted operation even in severe rain, which affects microwave links, and the high fade margins cope with attenuation of the laser beam which occurs only in situations of the most extreme snow and fog. System performance and reliability can be tracked locally or remotely with a number of advanced link management systems, including SNMP and GSM modem technology.

Marketing Director at Cablefree, Penelope Lee, said, "The newly launched Cablefree Gigabit system has been deployed as a major part of a Wireless Metropolitan Area Network in central London with a leading corporate client.

Roof-top and behind-glass installations link separate buildings' LANs, transmitting data across free space above London's busy Tottenham Court Road and other main thoroughfares up to distances of one kilometre and at the highest data rates achieved by a commercial wireless system."

About Cablefree

Cablefree Solutions is an independent company which designs, manufactures and markets a range of free-space optical communications systems based on Laser/IR technologies, which are capable of transmitting full-duplex voice and data across uninterrupted free space at distances from 200m to 4km, and at rates from 2Mbps to 1500Mbps. Unlike radio-based systems, Cablefree's wireless solutions require no licensing, planning permission or excavation work for operation and take less than three hours to install.

Cablefree systems are designed with a large fade margin which ensures signal integrity against extremes in weather and atmospheric conditions and high availability levels well in excess of 99.7%.

Cablefree systems are upgradeable, which is a feature not available in competitive solutions. With a simple card swap a 10Mbps Ethernet link can be upgraded to a 100Mbps fast ethernet, a 155Mbps ATM or a 622Mbps ATM link to carry all forms of multimedia traffic, including voice, data, video, or a combination of telephony and data. 10Mbps + 2 and 100Mbps + 2.

A 2Mbps telecoms link can be upgraded to 8Mbps or 4x2Mbps and a video link can be enhanced from a single to multi-channel link with audio/telemetry.

As well as the new Cablefree Gigabit, the company's products include the Cablefree 622 for data rates of 2 to 622Mbps over distances up to two kilometres; Cablefree Access offering telecom providers cost-effective solutions from 2 to 155Mbps up to four kilometres, and the short-range Cablefree Lite, offering 2 or 10Mbps for hops of around 200m. Applications include GSM microcell interconnect.

Cablefree offers extensive support of both proprietary and standards-based network management systems for all of its products.

Telecoms interfaces available include: G703 E1/CEPT, E2, E3, T1, DS-3, STS-1, ATM/Sonet/SDH STM-1 and STM-4.

Data networking interfaces available include: Ethernet, Token Ring, Fast Ethernet, Gigabit Ethernet, FDDI, Fibre Channel, ATM-155 and 622.

A wide range of broadcast TV and CCTV security interfaces are also available.
