ALTA launches in Italy: biz.yahoo.com Tuesday April 11, 4:35 pm Eastern Time AltaVista launches Internet service in Italy PALO ALTO, Calif., April 11 (Reuters) - Search engine AltaVista Co., which is majority-owned by Internet venture capital firm CMGI Inc. (NasdaqNM:CMGI - news), said Tuesday it has launched an Internet service in Italy. The launch marks company's sixth new country-specific site in Europe in the last five months. AltaVista, which is expected to go public this month, said in a statement that the site offers users local content and comprehensive search capabilities from an index of Internet sites that encompass about 95 percent of all sites based in Italy. According to company data for February, 56 million unique users worldwide visited AltaVista and more than half of all AltaVista visitors originate from outside of the United States. In conjunction with the launch, AltaVista will offer the Italian market free Internet access with a guaranteed bandwidth four times the Italian average.
