The Media Edge & ACTV's Digital ADCO Partner for Addressable, Interactive Advertising
NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 11, 2000--The Media Edge and ACTV, Inc. (NASDAQ: IATV), today announced that the companies will work together to create and deliver truly unique addressable, interactive digital television advertising. A charter program is expected to begin later this year and will include some of The Media Edge's largest clients. The Media Edge handles the global media planning and buying activities of Young & Rubicam (NYSE: YNR), in addition to serving non-Y&R clients.

Working through Digital ADCO, Inc., an ACTV subsidiary, the companies plan to help pioneer the future of television advertising. Digital ADCO's "SpotOn" service is a comprehensive, end-to-end solution for the delivery -- and accounting of -- targeted, addressable interactive advertising via digital cable, digital satellite, and digital broadcast television. "SpotOn" offers advertisers pinpoint accuracy and maximum effectiveness when delivering commercials, based on the general demographic profile of a region, or on the specific profile of an individual household generated by ACTV's software within the digital set-top in the home. "SpotOn" will also offer TV commerce opportunities, such as couponing and permission-based marketing initiatives. Additionally, the service allows for local advertising insertion into digital programming feeds.

A partnership with Motorola's Broadband Communications Sector, Digital ADCO is founded on an array of system technologies, including ACTV's patented "Individualized TV" software and Motorola's interactive digital platform.

"ACTV understands what marketers want out of digital television and they have the know-how to deliver it," said David Adelman, Senior Vice President and Director of Convergence Media, The Media Edge. "Digital ADCO's 'SpotOn' service provides a robust solution to the problem of sending advertising messages that are addressable at the household level. We look forward to working with ACTV to develop these applications for our clients."

The initial program will enable The Media Edge and Digital ADCO to gain a clear understanding of consumer and client attitudes towards the new medium, while receiving valuable insight for future applications of the Digital ADCO service.

"We strongly believe that 'SpotOn' will be the industry standard for creating and delivering advertising on any digital television platform," said Art Cohen, Senior Vice President of Advertising and E-Commerce for ACTV, Inc. "We're looking forward to working with The Media Edge, its partner companies, and their clients, to establish a new and powerful paradigm in television advertising."

Digital ADCO will provide services to MSOs, cable system providers, advertising interconnects, broadcast and cable television networks and programmers, and leading consumer product advertisers, advertising agencies, and media buyers.

ACTV's "Individualized TV" enables television programmers and advertisers to deliver individualized, targeted content via digital cable, digital broadcast or digital satellite television. The "Individualized TV" software - which is integrated in digital set-tops manufactured by Motorola, Scientific-Atlanta and Pioneer - remembers viewer commands and responses to on-screen prompts, enabling an unlimited number of viewers to individually-tailor the program or advertising they are watching. ACTV believes "Individualized TV" is the only technology that enables viewers to instantly and seamlessly customize their viewing experiences.
