Time out! Telstra is planning a deal with Hong Kong Telecom and further Asian expansion - this is going to be the climax of the 3G battle. Let's switch topics.

Anyway - I have no idea how anyone can be a "self claimed analyst", Brian. How does that happen? I have a hard time seeing anyone standing up and exclaiming: "I am an analyst!!" Wouldn't that be a total downer? It sounds like a real bad idea to me. Trust me, Brian - I have never done that nor am I intending to.

Well - apparently DoCoMo has flipped Hutchison by buying a 19% stake in it. And now Hutchison is talking up W-CDMA. If this Telstra-Hong Kong Telecom link really happens, they will be the second pan-Asian mobile powerhouse after the Hutchison/DoCoMo alliance.

Here's where the plot thickens... the same family controls Hutchison and Pacific Century (which now owns HK Telecom). So we have Hutchison/DoCoMo pair already backing W-CDMA. And now the son of Hutchison's big man is planning an alliance with Telstra. Would he really go against the interests of Hutchison and choose cmda2000?

My bet would be that now Telstra and Hong Kong Telecom will implement W-CDMA in all of their mobile markets in Asia. And this would be the haymaker that KO's cdma2000. The standard may cower bloodied and battered behind the back of Sprint - but on an international level, it would be finished. Stay tuned.
