The only speculative part about the post was the suggestion that the Warner brass might have pulled a string to make sure that their boy stayed out of harm's way. You're right, I don't have any tangible evidence of this, but I suspect it anyway, simply because that, in my experience, is the way the world works. It would be interesting to do a study on the war records of "notable" individuals: showbiz personalities, athletes, children of the rich and influential. Not only in WWII, but in all recent wars. I'd be willing to bet that with a few notable exceptions, the vast majority of these were mysteriously posted well away from the front. I'd make that bet even though I don't KNOW squat about it, simply because it seems as natural and inevitable as snow in a Buffalo January. I admit to being boundlessly cynical about celebrities and politicians. I have never seen anything that would make me otherwise, and I doubt that I ever will.
