Re: Is Gates right in fighting the almighty government?

<rant>

No. By normal standards he should realize the futility of
his actions and stop and yield. Even if he wins this battle,
he will only set himself up for losing the next one. And
next. And next. It's almost like, fighting your postman.
You may ultimately prevail, but at what cost ?

But normal Bill Gates is not. He lies at one extreme of the
bell curve, far from its belly where most of us are.
If he were to throw in the towel, he would have done it so
many other times in the past too - e.g., against OS/2 and
microchannel. We need to admit that his way of thinking
may be different. I doubt if he needed the billions lost
so his pain is also of a different kind.

In the end there is no right or wrong: it's your views
versus those of the rest.

You can also see how the govt. won this case - by raw power
alone. Witness the struggle it is having in figuring out
the remedies. On one hand it wants to brutalize Mr. Gates;
otoh it can't afford to harm the consumers, the businesses,
and themselves by being too brutal. This is a tacit
acknoledgement of the good Microsoft has brought to the
consumer, not of the harm that it allegedly inflicted.

When these clouds lift off, so will the stock. I can't
predict when this will happen, so my best course is to
treat this as a value play and hang on to my shares. I also
tend to think that seperating OS from Apps will bring a
lot of value to the shareholders, perhaps at the detriment
to the consumer.
