NEC shows chip supporting personalized interactive TV

LAS VEGAS -- NEC Corp. today announced a dedicated personal digital recorder
(PDR) chip that supports XTV, an advanced PDR technology that integrates with
set-top boxes, and makes it possible to personalize interactive television using
mass storage on a hard disk.
XTV is a technology developed by NDS Group plc, a British company
majority-owned by News Corp. that develops software and interactive systems for
electronic security and delivery of entertainment and information a wide range of
devices. NEC, of Tokyo, announced the PDR chip today at the NAB 2000 show in
Las Vegas.
The NEC PD82885æ companion chip is designed to support not only core PDR
requirements such as simultaneous record and playback but also provides
advanced functionality to enable features such as enhanced quality fast forward,
rewind and slow motion. The chip is fully compliant with NDS' XTV, a
third-generation PDR technology,
NEC and NDS have worked together to develop, design and integrate
NDS-specific requirements into the PD82885æ. This solution complements NEC's
Emma family of single chip devices digital set top boxes devices that provide the
core technology for interactive digital TV functions.
"We believe that the PDR is just what the consumer is looking for," said Tetsuya
Hikino, managing director, NEC Electronics (UK) Ltd. "This type of product will
give the TV viewer more feeling of being in control -- effectively being able to tune
in to their personal channel of live or recorded material. . . . The potential of this
new market is only just beginning to be understood."
"NDS has worked with NEC in the past and they have shown their ability to
develop leading silicon solutions," said Jas Saini, vice president of consumer
sevices at NDS. "This development with NEC has been important, and having the
availability of NEC's solution is a key component in making XTV a reality and the
gold standard for PDRs."
Both NEC and NDS are core members of the TV Anytime Forum, which is driving
standards needed to enable a wider industry to benefit from personalized
television solutions.
