B: Brazil: CLA to be used for satellite launch

The Brazilian government will sign an agreement with the US on April 18, 2000
that will enable the CLA (Centro de Lancamento de Alcantara) site situated in
Maranhao to host satellite launching operations. The agreement will open for
Brazil a commercial market that is to generate sales of US$45bil until 2007.
According to airport operator Infraero,CLA is prepared for 14 launches per year,
which would generate US$300mil. The government has budgeted R$40mil investments
for CLA to operate on a commercial basis. Orbital Science Corporation (OSC) has
announced plans of launching 2 communications satellites in Maranhao as of the
beginning of 2001. Fiat Avio is also interested in CLA.
