<<I'm not saying this is wrong but it casts another light on the "welfare problem".
Not only am I getting compliments from the devil, I fear I'm about to dance with him-- (One of penni's little welfare anecdotes) When I was an "Adult Service Worker", a very nice gentleman, well-dressed and very well-spoken, came in to talk to me about a nursing home for his dear mother. He said she had no assets and could not pay, that she needed Medicaid. Further investigation found that a few months prior to this, she had signed over all her assets, including her home, to her son, a fairly well-off dentist. He was furious when I told him that those assets counted against her for a couple of years-and that I was sure he understood that some people actually tried to manipulate the system by having parents turn over everything to their children in order to get the taxpayer to foot the bill. He stormed out, indignant, and I'm sure by now, we've paid for this woman's care while he vacationed in the Bahamas.
This was WRONG. It was IMMORAL. It was DISHONEST, if not illegal. I don't think children should have to foot the bill for parents, but I certainly don't think the above scenario should be allowed to happen at all-forget a two or three year time limit. And I think it does-over and over-so it's certainly not the just the ghettos and inner city, the uneducated, the minorities. It's a prevailing sentiment that cuts across all levels of society of "Why shouldn't I get something for free? Everyone else does." |
