This afternoon, someone asked me what the Business Intelligence company that Net Shepherd was spinning off to an IPO was all about. After I explained it to them, I came to the realization that the NSI discussion threads have concentrated primarily on the business model of Net Shepherd and Answers.com. What we seem to have let slide is the discussion around the Business Intelligence company that David Herman is heading - KPulse.com (which may be rumoured to be changing its name to ktopia) as well as ClickChoice.com.
To further assist my friend in understanding what the Business Intelligence and Knowledge Management disciplines are, I went looking for some information to clearly explain it to him. I came across a few articles that I feel do a fairly good job of that.
From my recollection of Mr. Baan's presentation, these two articles capture the essence of what is his view of the future was to be. This future has the collection and distribution of essential information to knowledge workers. This access to information will enable them to be successful in their endeavours. Mr. Baan's vision for the future has Net Shepherd, Answers.com, Ktopia, and ClickChoice.com as an integral part of his plans.
Here is an excerpt from two of them, followed by links to the complete articles. Enjoy . . .

Business Intelligence: Borderless Business Intelligence
"The Internet is having a profound effect on the sharing of information. It has enabled an expansion of business intelligence gathering activities by any company--small or large. The key to taking advantage of this enabler, however, is the recognition by an organization that its internal data may be of value to others--that the data is potentially revenue-generating. While data vendors know this already, many potential data recyclers don't. With some out-of-the-box thinking regarding the value of information, entrepreneurial companies can become data recyclers. However, any organization can gain significant advantage in the use of global business intelligence by utilizing the Internet to go beyond the enterprise. Traditional borders are now in large part nonexistent."

Analyst Insight: BI vs. Knowledge Management
"Ultimately, the disciplines of business intelligence and knowledge management will converge. From a technology perspective, we will either store all critical business information in a relational knowledgebase, or we will integrate various engines to create a giant publish-and-subscribe architecture that can dish up information to users or applications based on predefined preferences or business processes. I suspect both types of architectures will gain momentum.
From a business perspective, companies will continually look for ways to leverage information for competitive advantage. In the current business climate, companies are recognizing that information and knowledge ð and the ability to act on them ð are their most valuable resources. Consequently, companies will continually realign processes and reshape organizational structures to facilitate the acquisition, utilization and application of information and knowledge."
