The transitory ip addresses are probably not a big deal, if there is no 'search-engine' or central registry that allows users to hunt for these files.

By continually going after the search sites or central databases, I think the inconvenience factor will still make most people to buy the serial-copy-protected audio files that liquid audio and others are pushing.

As for membership based piracy rings, some good high profile undercover busts should make it difficult for these rings to become serious threats.

I hear you when you say that musicians in theory could still survive selling their music directly. In fact, I'd welcome a test run by some mainstream artistes to release GOOD material in unprotected MP3 as a test run.

I hope that the runs are successful, since that would prove that my cynical view of human nature is wrong, but I have my doubts.

True, but of course they only take a small percentage of the outrageous(IMHO) amount CD's are sold for. From what I read most musicians could sell their songs direct at $2 an album and make twice as much as they get now.

The music industry will somehow have to accommodate the new situation, rather than force things back to the status quo.The cat is out of the bag and it isnt going back.
