Marshall,

These systems are not based on some archaic, hurry-up-and-die COBOL system. The back-ends are whatever the back-ends are now, plus CORBA (not to be confused with the Stone Age programming language) or server-side Java and always using industry standard XML. The software isn't created in-house, it's installed in-house by the company's IT people who are hooking it up to their database. Please pay attention, very close attention, to what Oracle is doing because that's the model. So companies won't have to build their own software for this, they can get it easily, perhaps even for nothing.

You need to stop looking at this from the point of view of information technology of the last century, circa 1976. I'm afraid this had nothing to do with COBOL or Assembly or any other flinstonesque technology. I'm afraid most of this B2B is Y2K in sheep's clothing: very real, very necessary but we don't need a new industry to take care of it. The same information technology companies we have now are talking care of this, thank you very much.
