Art Cohen @ NAB2000
I made it to the panel discussion at the Venetian today. Attendance was probably 60-70 people or so, which was typical for other similar sessions. Art was a member of the panel along with a person from Wink and someone from Worldgate, and the moderator was from iXL Worldwide. There was supposed to be someone there from a company called the Interactive Channel in Dallas, but he didn't show up.
Basically, each of the panelists gave a description of what their companies did. The only downside to doing this is the fact that ACTV does so many things that it can be harder to comprehend compared to the simple offerings of the other companies, but Art did an excellent job of running through the various technologies that ACTV is involved in. He was the only one that used a pre-produced video promo in his piece in addition to the Powerpoint presentations that they all used. A lot of what he covered was stuff we all know, but he did make a point of the fact that advertisers will demand advertising accountability in the future, which ACTV produced targeted advertising can provide. In other words the fact that advertisers will be able to know exactly who is seeing their spots based on the data accumulated from the field is going to be a requirement of advertisers in the future.
Art also reiterated that these ACTV products are program and platform agnostic, in other words, it can be used on any program on any box through any cable system. His Powerpoint specifically mentioned boxes from Motorola/GI, SA, Pioneer, Sony, Pace, and Philips with regards to the platform agnostic point. He also mentioned that they were being careful to respect the privacy act guidelines to avoid the problems that DoubleClick ran into, but that this was "all about data" and how valuable that would be.
The show is starting to slow down and the crowd is thinning out. One more day.
