r.E,

It has been a long time so I can't say we never met, but I do not recall meeting Phil. I flew F-101Bs (the interceptor version of the VooDoo and a lot of my friends ended up flying RF-101s in Vietnam (the 45th Tac Recce Squandron - the Polka Dots). But unlike the F-101B, the RF-101 was a single seater and didn't carry a navigator.

I took the Air Force bait - hook, line and sinker, when they declared that if one volunteered for Vietnam, they would get three choices of aircraft they wanted to fly and were certain to get one of the three. My first choice was the F-4. I didn't want to make my wife a widow, so I passed by the F-105 and decided that helping out the guys on the ground would be satisfying and named the A-7 and A-1E as my second and third choices. I got my first choice; however, they inserted an R in front of it and I became a Recce Puke flying RF-4Cs. Imagine, you train all your career to shoot down other airplanes and they send you to war in an aircraft that doesn't have a gun. Bummer! I served with the 12th TRS with the motto of "Alone, Unarmed, and Unafraid" It was really "Alone, Unarmed and Scared shitless." Our main defense was to fly low and fast. You have heard of 'tree top level flying?' well we flew just above the weed tops - you had to look up to see the tree tops. We did have to go high for some missions and that is when you saw the SAMs etc... Maybe Phil flew as a navigator in F-101Bs and then went to war in RF-4s.

It was interesting. Hope I didn't bore anyone.
