Wall Street analysts had been expecting the company to report a profit of 24 cents per share, according to research firm First Call/Thomson Financial.

Overall sales rose 55 percent to $45.6 million from $29.5 million. Sales to the fiber optic communications market more than tripled to $16.7 million and sales to chip makers rose 150 percent to $5.7 million.

Looking ahead, Newport said it expects revenue in the second quarter to rise sequentially from the first quarter on the strength of its current backlog and anticipated strength in the optical and chip-making markets. Gross margins are expected to be within its historical range.
