I have been following this fiasco with JW and Poet with interest and I don't understand why Poet's catching so much grief.

Correct me if I'm wrong but:

JW offered up some advice -- which is good

Poet then took issue with some of the statistics used with that advice. This too is good.

Next step? Try to figure out what the truth is to better decide how to proceed.

JW's next step? Interpret Poet's criticism as a personal attack (a mistake as far as I can see) and then lose it in public, questioning Poets integrity and her species, to put it politely.

This got JW sent to the corner for a while. Rightly so and entirely JW's fault.

But Poet's now being blamed for JW's fate -- all sorts of people climbing on his little bandwagon in a competition to see who can come up with the cutest snipes.

Seems to me that in this business and especially during these stressful times, we should beware of the ad hominem.
With rare exception, it serves no purpose to attack a position or an argument by attacking its source. Nor should one accept some position just because you think that he or she is a good guy. If Hitler wrote that it was a bad idea to stick your tongue in a light socket and Jesus disagreed, I'd do a little research and probably ignore Jesus' advice, as much as I might admire and like the guy.
