They alienate Americans by mostly flying the Cuban flag, and not using English. Last night they were playing to the cameras by chanting slogans in Cuban. If they are hoping to win over the American public, they need to speak in English so they can be understood. As you, I think that sending Elian and his father back into captivity is an ugly mark on America, who has always stood for freedom and democracy.
