I can see the following being a huge market that Intel could be shooting for with Aware's DSL technology. Philips and Texas Instruments Demonstrate ADSL Set-top Box at NAB 2000 Monday, April 10, 2000 Philips Electronics (NYSE:PHG), a worldwide leader in digital set-top boxes, and Texas Instruments Incorporated (NYSE:TXN) (TI) the world leader in digital signal processors (DSPs) and analog, announced today that Philips will demonstrate a new broadband Internet set-top box powered by a programmable DSP-based ADSL modem chipset from Texas Instruments. The prototype set-top box is the first demonstration of its kind and runs a video on demand application based on Philips' MPEG4 technology. See the demonstration at NAB 2000, booth LVCC L6910. "Streaming media services such as video on demand will become a reality in the broadband Internet age," said Pieter Noordam, general manager of the Internet and Personal TV group in Philips Digital Networks. "Many new emerging services specifically target broadband Internet. Because of their entertainment focus it makes sense to bring these services straight to the television set in the living room via a broadband Internet set-top box." In the NAB demonstration set-up, MPEG4 movie clips are streamed from a Philips server connected to a Texas Instruments-based central office unit. The ADSL set-top box runs a very easy to use application that allows the consumer to select a movie clip of choice. This end-to-end demonstration shows the potential of streaming video to become a mass medium. "This is the first integrated demonstration of broadband entertainment to the home via telephone wires," said Marc Cetto, director of marketing for TI's Broadband Access Group. "The cooperation with Philips demonstrates broadband content including streaming audio and video over ADSL lines and shows service providers the true potential of the Internet as a home entertainment medium." The demonstration with Philips also supports TI's strategy to bring high-speed broadband access technology based on programmable DSP platforms to homes and businesses. TI DSPs are the ideal for enabling ADSL-based set-top boxes and other Internet appliances because they offer full programmability that allows for easy software upgrades as speeds and services evolve. This opens up a whole new customer to the DSL marketplace. Perry P.
